Ample rewards for Red Roof guests
If you routinely stay at Red Roof Inn, you could earn a large number of points relatively quickly with this hotel card – especially if you pair it with the hotel chain’s loyalty program. By itself, the RediCard+ Visa card offers five points for every dollar spent on Red Roof visits – a solid rewards rate for a card with no annual fee. That rewards rate shoots up to 15 points for every dollar spent when you couple your RediCard+ Visa points with points earned with the RediCard loyalty program.
The RediCard+ Visa also lets cardholders quickly boost their hotel rewards when they use the card for gas and fast-food purchases. Both categories earn two points per dollar spent.
Modest sign-up bonus
The RediCard+ Visa offers a small sign-up bonus of 6,000 points after the first purchase, but that doesn’t compare well with sign-up offers for other cards. That 6,000 points is enough to earn a free night’s stay at Red Roof Inn, but that’s about it. Many hotel cards lure cardholders with enough points to purchase multiple night stays or an evening in a hotel in a more expensive city.
Decent return for modest spending
With such a high rewards rate, you don’t have to spend much to earn a number of free hotel stays. For example, depending on the hotel room rate, just five nights at a Red Roof Inn could potentially earn you a free night. In some pricier locations, you would need to stay at a Red Roof Inn for just three or four nights to earn a free night’s stay. If you also spend a lot on gas or fast-food purchases, you could earn free hotel stays even faster.
Simple but limited redemption
The RediCard+ Visa makes redeeming points relatively simple by sending a free night’s stay certificate every time you earn at least 6,000 points. But the certificate expires 168 days after you receive it, so you’ll have to act relatively fast. You also can’t transfer your points to other loyalty programs or use them for anything other than Red Roof hotel stays. If you don’t want to be tied to staying at Red Roof Inn or Red Roof Plus+ properties, you may want to consider other cards.
Expensive APR
The RediCard+ Visa also charges a relatively high APR – especially for cardholders with lower credit scores – so don’t use this card for purchases you can’t immediately repay. Cardholders with the best credit scores may receive an APR of 14.24 percent, which is slightly below average for a rewards card. The average rewards credit card charges a maximum APR of 22.21 percent, according to CreditCards.com data. RediCard+ Visa cardholders with lower scores may receive an APR of 25.24 percent, which is higher than the average 22.56 percent for cardholders with bad credit.
Reasons to get it:
- You’re interested in using your card only for free night stays at Red Roof properties.
- You’re a fan of Red Roof Inn and tend to travel to cities served by the hotel chain.
- You want to be able to earn free night’s stays relatively easily without spending a huge amount.
How to use it:
- When possible, choose Red Roof Inn or Red Roof Plus+ for all your hotel stays, and use your card to book your reservation.
- Supplement your rewards earnings by using your card for gas and fast-food purchases.
- Keep track of the expiration dates for each rewards certificate you receive, and be sure to book a room within a year.
